gallery Khosrow Sadeghi is a professor at Graphics Center in Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.

Beside teaching engineering design courses, he has been actively involved in developing interesting tools and machines.

In 1996, he patented a geometrical tool called Conic Sections Compass in Germany (Patent # 196-35-333). Using this tool, conic sections (ellipse, parabola, and  hyperbola) of continuously varying dimensions can be drawn with adequate accuracy and efficiency in the easiest way compared with its previous patented counterparts. You can read more the conic section compass here.

Recently, he has designed a completely mechanical Carving Machine with a lot of novel features. He has also manufactured a working prototype version of this machine. The designed machine is very simple with low production cost compared to other available machines with same functionalities.

Novel Carving Machine Prototype

A Fully Mechanical Carving Machine Without Using Any Software:

Main Feature:
Given a specific model, this machine is capable of creating a simple copy, symmetric copy, scaled copy, or scaled symmetric copy of the original model.

Independent Scaling Feature:
For any given scaling factor, it provides all of above functionalities. Also the scaling factor of Z axis is independent of that of X and Y axis, in essence the scaled version can be shorter/taller and/or thinner/wider than the original model.

Multiple Distributing Feature: Also, assume that you got a model having a non flat logo on its surface, this machine can create a copy version of it with 2, 4 ,8 or more logos evenly distributing on its surface.

Artistic & Decorative Feature: Further more, using a very simple model like a rectangular cube, this machine can create several different types of unique statues which are very suitable for artistic designs and decorative objects.

Conic Sections Compass Patent

gallery

Although the theoretical principles underlying the construction of conic sections are widely known, Simple and fairly Inexpensive Devices for drawing such sections for Continuous Increment Range are not available in the market. The Conic Sections Compass (CSC) is specially designed and manufactured to satisfy these goals.

The existing templates for drawing circles and ellipses are designed to draw only a selected intermittent set of sizes. Other conic sections, such as hyperbolas and parabolas, may be drawn using the French irregular curve templates. These drawing procedures are therefore, less accurate, inefficient and slow.

The Conic Sections Compass (CSC) is a drawing instrument with which conic sections of continuously varying dimensions could be drawn with adequate accuracy and efficiency is specially designed and manufactured.

Depending on the size range the whole set may be contained in box sizes similar to those of the ordinary drawing instruments. The compass is composed of three parts: an Axis, a Support for this axis and a Pen. It is expected that with these simple designs and few components made by a less sophisticated production method, the total cost would be affordable.
